Monday, May 17, 2010 HANK JONES RIP- My personal thoughts on the master
I woke up this morning to find out that Hank Jones- one of the world’s greatest Jazz pianists passed away at 91. I have fond memories of hearing him play around New York City when I moved here for college. One of my fondest memories of Hank Jones was when he was playing at Tavern At The Green in the early 90’s. I met him at the bar before the show and told him I was a student of Barry Harris and I would love to be able to sit up close and watch how his hands moved through the chord changes. He said “sure, pull up a chair and sit off to the side of the stage and you can watch me that way” . I spent the evening completely spellbound at the way his fingers danced over the keys with complex rhythms and harmonies while going through the American Songbook. It was a highlight for me and I will continue to always remember Hank Jones and his piano. Please check out this video to get an idea of how great he was: Hank Jones- Willow Weep For Me Live
